Although not technically designated as its own trail, the South Lake to North Lake 'loop' is a popular summer backpacking trip as it passes through the spectacular high country of Kings Canyon National Park. The loop trail begins at the South lake trailhead, where the trail passes through gorgeous scenery over Bishop Pass, into Dusy Basin, and descends into Leconte Canyon. Here, the trail begins following the John Muir Trail north through Evolution Basin and Evolution Valley. Finally, the trail turns north then east towards Piute Pass, where it ends at the North Lake Trailhead. The incredible scenery, as well as the many possible side trips along the way, makes this trip an easy recommendation for a week long venture into the high country.
