Osprey on Tufa

Osprey Nest at Sunrise, South Tufa Reserve, Mono Lake, California. Mono Lake is an important sanctuary for migrating and nesting birds, including the Sea Eagle Osprey, known to build nests offshore on the large Tufa pinnacles. The Osprey diet consists mainly of freshwater fish and - given the lack of fish in Mono Lake - fly upwards of 5+ miles to Grant and Silver Lakes to hunt. During nesting season they are known to carry their catch over this dry stretch of land all the way back to their nests for themselves and their young.
