Hawaiian Moorhen

Hawaiian Common Moorhen (Alea Ula), Waimea River Valley, Oahu, Hawaii. In the 1950's, the population of this species was estimated to be no more than 57 (Engilis, A., Jr., and T. K. Pratt. (1993) Wilson Bull. 105:142-158). Despite its rise in population since, the bird is still listed as an endagered species, and given its secretive nature an accurate census has not been established.
