Red Tailed Hawk

The Red Tailed Hawk is one of the most common hawks in North America. When it is not perched surveying the ground beneath for prey, it can be found soaring the thermals high above the ground. The hawk hunts by diving from above - either from a perch of in mid-flight - to land upon its prey with talons extended.

While these particular photos have been taken throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, the majority were take at Shoreline Park.
